Who We Were, Who We Are
Imagine there were two neighbouring kingdoms at war with each other. A vicious tyrant ruled one kingdom, and the other by a good and noble King.
Now, imagine yourself as a servant of the tyrant; a General in his wicked army and a puppet to his schemes. Your whole life, you have lived as an enemy of the good King, fighting him at every turn.
One day, you come across the King’s son and his knights roaming the tyrant’s dark lands. The Prince says to you, “Come with me, and you will be shown mercy”.
You look upon the Prince’s knights. You notice that they are the polar-opposite to you. Their armour is strong and clean, their swords are sharp, and most of all, you notice that there’s a look of loyalty in their eye; they follow their prince out of their own will, and not from compulsion. You finally think to yourself, surely a life spent as a prisoner to the good King is better than a life spent as a pawn of the tyrant. And so, you surrender.
However, the Prince doesn’t take you to the King’s prison. Instead, he leads you straight to the good King himself! Immediately you’re aware that you’re in the presence of true royalty, and that the tyrant was a fraud. The King stands and declares loudly to his royal court: “Fetch this person clean clothes, give them brand new armour, and put a sharp sword in their hand; for they were once my enemy but from today onwards are co-heirs with my son, the Prince”.
Immediately a weight feels lifted from your shoulders. You turn to face the Prince who says to you, “There are others still out there who are as you were. Will go with me to bring them home?”
You wholeheartedly agree, and you go with the Prince; no longer as an enemy but now as a friend.
We Were Once Enemies
Colossians 1:21
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behaviour.
Whether you realised it or not, before you were saved you were actually an enemy of God. Some people, are actively and knowingly working against God. But for others, they are simply blind (2 Corinthians 4:4) and don’t even realise they are dead in sin and are enemies of God. Jesus also taught this and said it this way:
Matthew 12:30
He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.
There is no middle ground with God. We are either wholehearted followers of Jesus or not at all.
Now We Are Children Of God
Galatians 3:26-29
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptised into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
This is such amazing news! When you gave your life to Jesus, you were literally translated out of the darkness and into His marvellous light (1 Peter 2:9). You went from being an enemy of God to being a son or daughter of God. You went from being His enemy to being His family. That is the amazing grace of God! This is why the gospel is described as good news. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16).
